Happy Birthday, Little Goose!

Little Goose. That is her nickname. Today Little Goose turns six. At about a month old, we gave Callie that nickname because she can be stubborn and loud. Oh, so very, very loud. Of course, her teacher would say that she is nothing like a goose. In fact, Callie has never displayed any of the negative characteristics of a goose while in her classroom. The word angelic may have even been used to describer her. Yep, angelic along with bright, kind, patient, sweet, thoughtful, caring, smart, hard-working, diligent, focused. Even the word quiet. Can you believe it? But she's also stubborn. And loud. Did I mention that she is loud? If you don't believe me, ask our neighbors. Oh, and she's beautiful, too. And funny. Really funny. Without her, our family would be sadly boring. Let's just drop those qualities into the mix.

Do you know what you get when you combine loud and stubborn with LOTS and LOTS of great qualities? You get a strong and passionate kid who is learning to stand up for herself and those around her and to freely express her adamant beliefs about right and wrong (so if you eat at McDonald's she may target you for a conversation about how their cows stand in poop all their lives). For Callie, life is black and white and she isn't afraid to say what she thinks when she thinks it, but she is also compassionate and empathetic.

In other words, we hit the jackpot. At six years old, when her stubbornness is misdirected, she may not seem like the jackpot. When we joke about the handful that her husband will inherit, she doesn't seem like a treasure. But when I list every quality that Callie has, I know that God has gifted me with a child unlike any other. She is amazing, and a precious, precious gift to me.

Little Goose then...

And Little Goose last night...

And, yep. I made a cake. And (for like the third time in my life) it was not a wreck!
